However, thought should also be given to the advanced surface engineering technologies that have been progressing at a similar rate. The importance of surface finishing makes it a highly critical but potentially underestimated step in the manufacturing process. This can particularly be the case with mechanical finishing processes such as wet blasting. However, not only is wet blasting a highly “green” method it has also been proven to give great benefits for a number of applications that are typically tackled using alternative processes.
Vapormatt have been providing surface finishing solutions for wet peening and cleaning to the aerospace industry for several years and on a global level. The same can be said when painting and lacquering carbon fibre parts as the uniform and controlled finish eliminates the risk of fibre damage and inconsistencies. It is for this reason that several Formula 1 teams and, more recently, the National Composites Centre, have chosen the Vapormatt process to prepare the composite parts.
